The Excursion has been built for only 6 years before being discontinued for being just too inefficient. However, even though it used considerably more fuel than similarly sized SUVs, it was still quite successful. According to writerformypaper.com experts in business, such cars are on the rise in America. Because of that it seems a successor might be on its way. The original was actually replaced by the Expedition EL which was nearly as big but it wasn’t nearly as capable as its predecessor. Because of that the rumored 2018 Ford Excursion might change all of that. Like the original, the 2018 version of the SUV is expected to be based on the same chassis as the F-250 Super Duty. This means it will be considerably heavier than the equivalent Expedition despite still having an aluminum body.
In detail
Most rumors and reports from car accessories blog bestnetreview.com suggest the new Excursion would weight considerably less than its predecessor which tipped the scale at over 7,600 pounds in certain trim levels.
Thanks to the aluminum body and the new chassis, the 2018 model could weight closer to 7,000 pounds or even less. This would bring it quite close to the Expedition MAX while not having any of the drawbacks.
Early reports suggest a tow-rating north of 12,000 pounds, more than 3,000 pounds more than the newly released Expedition. This would give Ford a clear advantage over their rivals and it should be quite easy for them to become the leader of their class. On top of the larger tow-rating, the Excursion would also benefit from beefier axles as well as a more potent engine.
2018 Ford Excursion Engine
While the Expedition gets a 3.5 liter twin-turbo V6, the 2018 Ford Excursion is actually expected to get V8 power. However, unlike the gas-guzzling engine of its predecessor, the new model is more than likely going to sport a diesel as its only powertrain. This would be a bold move by Ford but it would basically solve all the SUV’s issues without having to develop a new engine.
Their 6.0 liter turbocharged PowerStroke is currently one of the most powerful on the market. Most rumors suggested the one in the Excursion could make as much as 450 horsepower and over 1,000 lb-ft of torque. This would be just as much power as the Expedition but double the torque-rating. Thanks to that the only real bottleneck would be the chassis and axles. This opens up new possibilities for Ford which could offer a beefier version of the Excursion at a later date. Considering the amount of power under the hood, 20,000 pounds of tow-rating wouldn’t be out of the question.
The design of Ford Excursion
The 2018 Ford Excursion is expected to take a completely different route than the Expedition. While the latter looks much closer to Ford’s crossover lineup, the former is expected to be closely related to Ford’s current trucks.
Expect it to receive a very similar front end to that of the new F-150. On top of that the Excursion is likely going to receive the same cabin but with a completely different rear end which could be quite similar to that of the Expedition.
When it comes to the more secured design, companies like Ford Armormax are the best place to go. These companies provide armored protection to the vehicle!
Inside the cabin
So far it seems that the massive SUV could feature as many as 8 seats in a 2+3+3 configuration. This is also in use on the smaller Expedition. Thanks to the larger body and the larger payload rating, the Excursion should be more than capable at accommodating more luggage in the trunk when carrying 8 people.
The overall set of features is likely going to be closer to that of the F-150 than that of the Expedition. Also, the design inside the cabin is expected to be more utilitarian with slightly more durable materials. More luxurious versions are a real possibility but these would likely be released at a later date.
