2018 Ford Edge SEL Introduction
Released in 2014, the current Edge has been a rather successful car which managed to get quite a few fans around the world. In order to make it an even better deal, a short while ago the 2018 Ford Edge SEL Sport Appearance Package was revealed. This will become available in dealerships in a short while and it is expected to boost the sales of the car. Even though it doesn’t bring anything too special to the mix, this package should allow the mid-range model to shine. This would definitely make the Edge a better deal than before and it should allow Ford to cover a much wider part of the market.
What is it?
Starting at little less than $33,000, the SEL package is just a small step up over the SE while bringing a lot of cool features over it. In fact the regular SEL comes with things like a 10-way adjustable driver’s seat, a roll-stability system as well as climate control and LED DRLs as standard. One of the more impressive features has to be the RSC system which basically brakes each wheel independently according to the driving conditions. This allows the car to corner flatter than otherwise and it should boost the driver’s confidence.
What is new for 2018?
The biggest change on the 2018 Ford Edge SEL is the new Sport Appearance Package. While it may not sound all that impressive, this does bring a few interesting features into the mix. On the exterior this package adds titanium-colored window inserts, grille as well as mirror-caps.
The wheels are all new five twin-spokes which are similar in design to those on the regular SEL but these are 19 inches in diameter. The standard tires are also better but the car still comes with the same brakes as before. This package can be had in a few different colors which are also available on the Sport version. Unfortunately a new exhaust or at least a new grille, more similar to that of the Sport model, are not available which is a shame.
Inside the cabin
The interior of the 2018 version has to be one of the more impressive things about it. While the features have not changed much, the design did. The new 2018 Ford Edge SEL Sport Appearance Package version gets a brand new upholstery. This combines gray cloth on the side bolsters and on the roof with orange suede cloth which creates a really striking contrast.
The only downside we see here has to be the lack of a color matched set of inserts which would have gone a long way. Another big upgrade is Ford’s Sync3 infotainment system which can be had as standard on this edition. This makes it a steal as the entire package costs just under $1,300 making it nearly as cheap as the infotainment system itself.
2018 Ford Edge SEL Engine and Specs
As expected, the SEL Edge retains the engines of its predecessor. The base model gets a 2.0 liter turbocharged-four gasoline mill which is good for 245 horsepower and 275 lb-ft of torque. While it may not sound all that impressive, this is actually more than most of its rivals. With it the Edge will hit 60 MPH in under 8.0 seconds which is quite good for its class. The upgrade comes in the form of a 3.5 liter naturally aspirated V6 which is good for up to 280 horsepower and 250 lb-ft of torque. The transmission also remains the same 6 speed automatic as before which is average at best. We do hope that in the near future the car is going to receive Ford’s new 9 speed automatic which is a far better transmission than the current one.
