For a brief amount of time Ford sold a compact car in the US as well as in Brazil under the Maverick name. Later down the road they used the same name for a European crossover but this was quickly abandoned. While most of us forgot the name, it seems Ford didn’t. In fact they decided to lengthen the trademark hold for the Maverick brand. This made quite a few people question why Ford would do such a thing. Not too long after that rumors about a new model started to appear. Even though it may seem a bit far fetched at this point, a future 2018 Ford Maverick might actually happen. At this point there is still little information and most of it are thanks to all the rumors floating around the internet.
In detail
Considering its predecessor was a compact car, it would make sense for the 2018 model to be in a similar class. However, Ford currently has a compact car out there with the Focus. This is a small hatchback with more than enough room for 5 people.

Even if this is the case it seems the Maverick might be something completely different. It seems most think the car will be a rear wheel drive two-door coupe or sedan offering the same level of comfort as the Focus. Thanks to that it should be quite cheap to buy and run and it should be a first on the US market in a while.

Ford’s current design scheme it quite a bit more futuristic than that of the original car. Because of that it is safe to assume the 2018 Ford Maverick will in fact offer an all new design that will have nothing in common with its predecessor. If this will happen then expect the Maverick to look like a slightly smaller Mustang with a possible four-door version.

The latter would allow Ford to start a new trend which would definitely give them a huge boost on the market. It also seems to car will have the usual long hood and pushed back cabin of a true sports car so it won’t be the cheap economy car most people were expecting it to be.
Inside the cabin
The original was meant purely as a cheap way to move around. The upcoming 2018 Ford Maverick on the other hand will be quite a bit more different than that. For starters, it seems Ford will give the car a lot of features for the price. In fact it should be pretty much identical to the Focus when it comes to the available safety systems or the infotainment options. The design will be a bit more different though. Some suggested the car might share parts with the Mustang but so far nothing has been confirmed. If this will happen though then expect the Maverick to be a blast to drive in. One of its main selling points will likely be its driving position which will be considerably lower than that of the similarly priced Focus.

Under the hood
The original was available with inline 6 or V8 engines offering a good amount of power for the time. The new model on the other hand will likely come with all turbocharged engines for good fuel efficiency and a lot of power. The base model is expected to boast a 2.0 liter turbo-four offering just over 240 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. A larger 2.7 liter V6 EcoBoost with around 310 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque might be an option. Both of these should be available with a 6 speed manual and rear wheel drive. Ford’s 10 speed automatic is expected to be an option. An economy engine, possibly a smaller 1.5 liter EcoBoost with 3 cylinders, could be added in order to lower the price to the same level as that of the Focus.
