2018 Ford Mustang – Design, Specs, Performance

In production since 2014, and revealed back in 2013, the Mustang finally received a well deserved facelift. This was showcased a couple of months ago but only recently Ford unveiled all the details about the 2018 version of the car. The interesting part is that there are quite a few upgrades over its predecessor which is more than what most manufacturers change through these mid-life changes. The 2018 Ford Mustang received a new look, a different set of engines as well as a really impressive interior. The end result is one of the better pony-cars on the market and, dare we say, one of the better sports cars at this price point.

In detail

The new car is still based on the same platform as its predecessor. In fact the changes to its structure have been kept to a minimum. The car did receive a new set of rear shocks as well as slightly different springs all around. This should allow the 2018 model to be better to drive and also more responsive which was not really the case with the previous one.

Even though not official, it seems Ford may have changed some of the safety features as well. The car is expected to receive things like a frontal collision warning and at least emergency braking as standard. This should raise the NCAP safety rating from just 2 stars to either 4 or 5 in order to be in line with its European competitors.

The design of Ford Mustang 2018

One of the biggest changes with the 2018 Ford Mustang is the way the car looks. Even though it may look the same for an untrained eye, Ford changed pretty much everything on the exterior. The car comes with a new set of curvier headlights, a different hood with standard heat extractors, a new bumper as well as a brand new rear end.

This boasts different tail lights, which are now angled for a slightly better look, a new bumper and a new exhaust system. New wheels are available across the range while the car can be had in new colors too. The GT350, and its R counterpart, remained unchanged which is quite interesting to see.

The interior

At a first glance the cabin of the new 2018 Ford Mustang is not all that different from its predecessor. However, there is a new instrument cluster while the materials are slightly better as well.

As an option Ford is now offering a new 12 inch driver’s display which completely replaces the old instrument cluster. Their Sync3 system is also available as an option, even on the base model, which is a huge improvement over the older car.

The big change here is the V6 which has been discontinued. This means the base version of the 2018 Mustang now comes with a 2.3 liter turbo-four EcoBoost which is good for up to 310 horsepower and a rather impressive 350 lb-ft of torque. The more impressive part about it is that the base price of the car went down by around $600 over the old V6. This makes the new EcoBoost model considerably cheaper than the one before it. On top of that the car also gets a standard line-lock feature which is quite impressive in its own right. The GT is still available with its 5.0 liter naturally aspirated V8. This comes with a new cylinder coating which allows it to push as much as 460 horsepower. The drawback is the fact that the price for the GT went up by around $2,000. A 6 speed manual is still available across the range but the old 6 speed automatic has been replaced by Ford’s brand new 10 speed gearbox which is faster and smoother.
