Ford Evos Concept Introduction

Back in 2011 Ford was in full process of re-imagining themselves as a company. The car that allowed them to do it all is the Ford Evos Concept. This was a four-door coupe meant to showcase Ford’s newest corporate look, the Kinetic 2.0. This car is the main reason why Ford has been able to come up with all those great designs we have today. The Evos was actually a bespoke car built with just one purpose in mind: to shook the general public and make a statement. Even though now the car is mostly unknown, it was one of the hottest releases back at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. The car has been designed by Ford Europe but despite that it was actually meant to showcase Ford’s upcoming global design scheme.

In detail

There is not that much available information about the car. It seems it has been built on a space-frame chassis which has been covered in aluminum body panels. Thanks to that the car was quite light as well as it had a really stunning design which wouldn’t have been possible in any other way.

The more interesting part is that it was a fully functional car and not just a display item. It featured an engine, full interior and it was able to drive which isn’t really the case anymore with today’s concepts.

The design

The most impressive part of the Ford Evos Concept has to be the way it looks. When it was released back in 2011 the car looked like nothing else on the road. It was quite small for what it was supposed to be. It was just 4.5 meters long and 1.36 meters tall but it was nearly 2 full meters wide and it had a really long wheelbase.

Combining its size with the really low and arched roof-line, raked windshield and flared wheel arches, the Evos looked pretty much like a supercar. In the front it had Ford’s current grille design and a really slim set of headlights. There were no tail lights but Ford did install LED DRLs as surrounds for the brake cooling ducts. The rear of the car boasted a car-wide LED strip for the tail lights, two triangular reverse lights as well as a center exhaust. Ford also installed a diffuser and hot-air exhausts but more on these later.

The interior of Ford Evos

The Ford Evos Concept had 4 individual seats with a 5th seat between the 2 rear seats. The interesting part is that the driver’s seat was red in comparison with the other 4 which were white. Thanks to its four gull-wing doors, the Evos was pretty much fully opened up when the doors were up.

This allowed its cabin to look like a cabriolet’s cabin which is really unusual for a sedan. The dashboard was quite futuristic but it was fully functional which is highly impressive.

Under the hood

The Evos boasted a hybrid powertrain which has been later used in Ford’s hybrid and plug-in hybrid cars. This uses a 2.0 liter naturally aspirated Atkinson cycle inline 4 mated to an electric motors. The engine was actually mounted in the back right on top of the rear axle. This allowed Ford to make the car rear wheel drive and keep the weight distribution nearly perfect. Even though the engine was barely powerful enough for a family sedan, it was efficient and that was all it mattered. The car was actually a plug-in hybrid, so it was possible to charge it from a wall in order to drive for a few miles on electricity alone. At the time most of us hoped Ford was going to release the car as a production vehicle because even though it wasn’t powerful, it was really special.
