You should know that the options you have depend on the shape and the model of the motor home and the more beat up it is, the harder it will be to sell it. Because of that, if you just decided to get rid of it, don’t let it sit unprotected on your property.

Here are the most common ways to deal with an old motorhome.

Sell it on eBay or Craigslist

If you think that your old RV is not worth anything, then you should think again. There are so many DIYers out there that want your trailer more than you and they are willing to pay you money to take it away.

There are always some tiny house and vintage trailer fans that are looking to get that special motor home that will make their dreams come true.

The tiny houses are usually 500 square feet or less and people who are creating them are always looking for old RVs to reuse the spare parts and create the small structures. There are so many blogs for tiny houses and one of the creators said that he bought an old and rusty trailer for $300. Then he reused some of the appliance and the undamaged trailer frame. See? Your old RV can get a new life and can make other people happy.

Because of this, you need to take some pictures of your old motor home and put it online. You don’t have to use just Craigslist or eBay. There are so many different websites and even Facebook groups that will help you do that. And if no one contacts you right away, don’t despair, the right buyer is out there.

If you are able to drive or tow your motorhome away, then there are so many RV salvage yards where they can take it off your hands. The easiest thing you can do is go online and type “RV salvage in [your location]”. You can find the nearest one and if you don’t want to drive it around, you can just go there with pictures of it and see how much money you can get for it.

The great thing about it is that you can visit more than one salvage yards and see which one offers the best amount of money.

Some RV buyers and junk auto yards offer free tow-away service and they pay cash on the spot. So, you won’t even have to worry about the towing part. You should know that if you try and save it yourself, chances are, you will make more money than selling it in a salvage yard. However, the RV buyers will take it off your hands right away and they will save you time and effort.

Pay someone to get rid of it

There are a lot of junk RV buyers that offer you easy ways to dispose of your old motorhome. The only downside is that you have to pay them to take your RV away.

The companies that do that tow away old RVs and take rigs in every condition imaginable. They have experience with taking trash-stuffed trailers and even decrepit RVs that are abandoned on some property out there. Depending on your location, you can find a company that does that.

Skoolie Livin suggests that this type of companies are great because they can take away any size or model motor home from your property. If the RV has to be towed, the companies charge customers more than if the trailer can run on its own.

You should be aware that these places have different fees, and they are usually between $500, for small trailers, up to $2000 for motorhomes.

Dismantle it yourself

When you dismantle the RV yourself, you can send it to the RV graveyard on your own pace and schedule. The great thing about this is that you can get some profit from recycling various RV parts and scrap metal.

If you go online and search for scrap metal recycling or scrappers you can find some scrap metal companies who can explain the positive and negative sides of tearing apart an old RV for money.

You can even learn how to identify different types of metal, how much each of those parts is worth and how to take safety precautions when you do that yourself.

Other ideas

Other things you can do with your old motorhome include:

  • Giving/selling it to a fisherman or hunter
  • Donating it to charity
  • Repurpose, Renovate, and Flip

If you want to get rid of your old RV, then you first need to do your research. Find out the make and the model and go online to see if people are already selling the same RV somewhere. Depending on the market and the condition you will be able to see if your old motorhome is worth anything.

In cases where you want to sell it as soon as possible, you can put a price lower than the one other people are looking for. In any case, you will need to be patient and don’t expect that your RV will get sold in a few hours. Expect for people to try and barging and some of them may even try and scam you.

If the motorhome is working and you don’t plan to make money on it, then the best thing you can do is to donate it. If you know a fisherman that could use it, you can give it to them or you can find a charity that will be happy to use your own motorhome.
