The B-Max is a small MPV built by Ford since 2012. The car shares most of its running gear, engines and interior with the Fiesta but it has a more usable interior than its sibling. However, so far the B-Max hasn’t really been that successful which is mostly due to the car’s weight and sub-par engines when it comes to its power output. A while ago rumors suggested the car was going to be discontinued but it seems this is not going to be the case. Instead it will likely receive an update with the 2018 Ford B-Max. This update is aimed at the car’s interior and powertrain which are both in desperate need of some attention.

Some also suggested that the running gear might be revised. Why? Well, the B-Max is actually much heavier than the Fiesta but it has the same springs and shocks. This means it is a bit too soft and it had a lot of body roll for a car this small. The revised model is expected to get stiffer springs and better shocks.

These should be able to better control the body roll without ruining the way it feels on the road. The brakes are also expected to be improved with four-wheel disc brakes and larger rotors for the front wheels. These changes alone should be well worth the upgrade over its predecessor which is simply not as good as its rivals.

One of the main selling points of the current car is the fact it has rear sliding doors. These allow great access to the rear seats and they also give the car great versatility for those with small children as the doors won’t open away from the car so they won’t be smashed by kids. On top of that the doors make it safer as the view out won’t be obstructed by the doors.

Rumors suggested the 2018 Ford B-Max will retain the doors and most of the design of its predecessor. However, the car is actually expected to receive a brand new front end, slimmer headlights, a larger grille and possibly a new hood. The rear will likely get closer to the new Fiesta with larger horizontal headlights and possibly a roof-spoiler in order to make it feel a bit sportier.

Most of the cabin will change for the better. The dashboard on the new B-Max is going to be taken straight out of the new Fiesta. This means it will get a much cleaner design with less buttons and a more usable layout. The great Sync 3 infotainment system is going to be available as an optional extra while things like frontal collision warning or even an adaptive cruise control system are likely going to be available on the higher end versions.

The B-Max will continue to offer a superior amount of headroom to the Fiesta. Also, the car might receive a sliding set of rear seats in order to allow the driver to choose between trunk capacity or passenger space.
Under the hood
The naturally aspirated engines will be gone. The base model of the 2018 Ford B-Max will likely come equipped with a 1.0 liter EcoBoost offering 125 horsepower. A larger 1.5 liter turbo-four offering up to 150 to 160 horsepower has also been rumored. These two will likely be mated to a 6 speed manual driving the front wheels.

A 1.5 liter diesel with as much as 120 horsepower is also a real possibility. Unfortunately an all wheel drive system is still very unlikely which is a shame as it would have been positively received. All three engines are expected to be available with an optional 6 speed automatic which would make it that much easier to drive.
