2019 Ford Edge – More-Speeds Shifter, While Rest Is Mystery

Ford is very meticulous with mid-size SUV segment. It has three products, all trying to perform different tasks while existing on the same plane. Edge comes as the funkier and smaller alternative to brutish looking Explorer and “wardrobe” spacious Flex. It is also most courageous between the bunch as it sailed across the ocean, landing on the old continent not at all welcoming for mid-size SUVs without premium badges. Anyway, current generation debuted three years ago, so certain mid-life changes are approaching in form of 2019 Ford Edge.

MANLIER, FUNKIER, SAME?

Spy shots of upcoming refresh are available and they are not saying pretty much anything. Besides hypnotic body wrap, lights and grille are additionally covered by a cloth, preventing us to conclude anything. Is it going to turn to manlier side by following Explorer’s path or is it going to augment its own funkiness, we simply don’t know.

Maybe we know that it is not going to stay the same, giving how much attention was employed into the camo. Still, there is one thing that could start the debate as additional tail lights cladding doesn’t span over the whole rear, making us wonder whether the light bar connecting those covered lights is destined for vanishing.

2019 FORD EDGE INTERIOR

We wouldn’t expect notable interior changes though. Edge was already adorned with Sync 3 system, along with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, so we don’t see 8-inch screen capable of significant novelties in the near future. The thing that could, and should change on the inside, is definitely build quality which is appalling.

Maybe we should point also at cheap plastic on center console which arrives as discrepancy compared to decent materials on other places, which could also be an object of revisions. If rest remain the same it is fine to us, as despite being smallest mid-size SUV on Ford’s shelf, Edge is still decently spacious at the back and in the boot, compared to the majority of rivals.

2019 Ford Edge Specs

We also wouldn’t hope much for changes in engine lineup, as it is very decent as it is. From turbocharged 2.0-liter L4 with 245 hp to naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V6 rated at 280 hp. Creme de la crème is 2.7-liter twin-turbo V6 boosting 315 hp, with which this Edge reaches 60 mph in 5.6 seconds. And that figure is lower than one offered by weirdly fast Pilot, V8 powered Durango or Grand Cherokee and finally, that comes as faster than Explorer with twin-turbo V6 producing 365 hp. That also means it is the fastest thing in the segment if we put aside SRT versions and madly insane Trackhwak arriving from FCA corporation. Despite we don’t foresee power boost acceleration figures might change for all Edge versions. Insatiable appetites for higher and higher number of speeds when a transmission is concerned will eradicate current 6-speed automatic in favor of 9-speed one. That will presumably also affect fuel efficiency figures, in the positive manner that is.

2019 FORD EDGE RELEASE DATE AND PRICE

Fresher 2019 Ford Edge should probably break the cover during next year, while pricing strategy shouldn’t differ much from the current one. At this moment base SE trim starts at $29k while top Titanium is at incredibly fair $35.6k, while in order to get that sweet twin-turbo V6 you’ll have to opt for Sport version, which also brings some sporty make-up and price tag of $40.4k. Still, even that is significantly below all rivals, apart from Hyundai’s Santa Fe Sport and “why is it still here” Dodge’s Journey. In short, Edge is already a product with more than few shiny attributes, while upcoming refresh might add some new ones.
