The Focus is one of Ford’s best selling models and for a good reason. It comes with the best chassis in its class and on top of that it also offers great value for money. Unfortunately the car is rather old at this point and at least the interior can’t really match most of its rivals. In order to change that a brand new version is going to be released with the 2019 Ford Focus. This will have little to nothing in common with the ongoing generation. The car will be larger, more efficient as well as lighter. While details are still scarce, the camouflaged prototypes do give us an idea about the finished product.
In detail
Not much is known about the platform of the upcoming Focus. We do know the car will have a longer wheelbase and that it is slightly wider than the ongoing generation. This became clear from the first test mules that used the body of the current model.
The prototype of the new Focus also makes it quite clear that it is lower which could mean a more aggressive overall design. The car will likely retain the fully independent suspension setup as well as the hatch and sedan body styles. The wagon is likely going to remain available only in Europe. The price is expected to increase, especially since Ford has to make room for the Ka+ in their roster.
The design
The prototype of the 2019 Ford Focus makes it quite clear the car is quite similar to the new Fiesta. The grille seems to be slimmer than that of the current model while the headlights seem bigger. The hood is definitely lower than on its predecessor while the lower bumper seems to be mostly identical to the newly released Fiesta.
Its profile also looks remarkably similar to the Fiesta with the short overhangs and coupe-like roof-line. The back ditches the old design for something a bit more modern. The rear window seems smaller but the tailgate is definitely wider while the roof spoiler adds a bit of sportiness into the mix.
Inside the cabin
The camouflaged test mule we’ve seen a while ago had the same type of dashboard as the new Fiesta. The infotainment system’s screen was mounted high on the dashboard while the center stack featured a minimal amount of buttons.
This could indicate Ford is looking to give their cars more similar design schemes inside and out which comes with its advantages and disadvantages. We do hope they will manage to make the Focus feel like a more upmarket version than the Fiesta, especially since the price difference between the two will be noticeable.

2019 Ford Focus Engine
The old 160 horsepower 2.0 liter engine is likely going to be discontinued altogether. The new base engine on the 2019 Ford Focus could become their 1.0 liter EcoBoost which is known to make up to 140 horsepower and over 160 lb-ft of torque. Further up the range Ford’s brand new 1.5 liter 3 cylinder mill could be offered. This engine has been announced for the Fiesta ST where it will make 197 horsepower. The one in the Focus will likely make slightly less while offering better low-end torque. Both engines are expected with a standard 6 speed manual while a 9 speed automatic should be an option. The ST is likely going to use a 270 horsepower 2.0 liter EcoBoost mated to a 6 speed manual and an all wheel drive system. It still is early to talk about a future RS but like with its predecessors, the RS is likely going to be released closer to the end of its life. A hybrid as well as an electric model are highly unlikely at this point, especially since Ford is going to release the Model E range of cars.
